21st SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

October 21, 2007 + Gospel: Luke 16:19-31

Jesus brings the Gospel to everyone.

Do you bring the Good News of Jesus to everyone? Or just to those you like? The Rich Man in today’s Gospel was concerned that his brothers would hear this good news, but would they listen? Would our brothers and sisters be able to hear the idea that God cares for them, that they are important—or perhaps they are too busy looking at their own needs and desires. Help them by example.

SHOWING GRATITUDE TO ONE ANOTHER

There are many times when we forget to thank one another. And the basic title for the Anaphora or Eucharistic Prayer is the "Thanksgiving." We come together to show thanks to God, but the Scripture even orders us, on the way to give our gift at the Altar, if we remember something we have against our brother or sister, or they have against us, we have to first make up with our brother or sister at least in our hearts, then receive Jesus, the Bread of Life.

I want you to know how grateful I personally am to each of you for your kindness to each other and to me. I give thanks to God for your goodness and your good example. Please keep it up!

On the other hand, if I have offended anyone in the parish, I ask your forgiveness—if we do not do this, how can we receive Jesus? Now of course we take Holy Communion because we need it so badly. But our long Prayer before Holy Communion shows us how to prepare for Communion by being forgiven by the community.

But it can not be just mere words. It must be in actions as well. For example, we can say we forgive this or that person, but then refuse to speak to them. And Jesus says again, how can you forgive and get along if you are not grateful to each other for even the slightest help or kind word?

Of course sometimes some men and women do not know how to be grateful to other people, or make amends when they have offended or been offended. This is difficult. Some folks seem to have a particularly hard time forgiving priests. And priests also find it difficult—but worthwhile!
